The Omnibook 6100 is defined as a “two-spindle” system, which puts it into the “thin-and-light” category. It’s a tad over six pounds (6.3 pounds, to be exact). A dual-spindle system is one that has a hard drive plus one other storage device–you can have a floppy or and optical drive (e.g., DVD), but not both. (See figure 1).

Before we really dug into the innards of the 6100, we first had to remove a number of different plastic doors and covers. The first thing we did was flip the notebook over and pop out the battery and removable drive. Next, we removed the covers over the memory slots and the mini-PCI slot (which contained the wireless networking adapter). (Figure 2, 3, 4).


Here’s the underside of the 6100 with the battery and removable drive detached. The card in the mini-PCI slot in the upper right is the ActionTec wireless networking card. The memory slots are in the upper center of the chassis.

We also removed the 2.5″ hard drive, which just slides out of a bay on the right side above the battery compartment (as we look at the underside of the Omnibook).


Here’s a close-up of the mini-PCI slot, with the ActionTec 802.11b adapter in place. The wires on the right lead to the antenna.

Now that the access panels on the underside have been removed, it’s time to tackle the top. There’s a small panel that lies over the top of the keyboard that needs to be removed first. (Figure 5).
